How a wrong turn led to the right church

Eddie and Kathy Chu

Eddie and Kathy didn’t mean to go to Eastminster.

When they first moved to Belleville, they needed to find a new church home. They came from a vibrant church community in Scarborough. Church had always been an important part of their lives, with both of them being active in church life, Kathy as a church administrator for over 30 years and Eddie in various roles. Moving for work meant starting over in a new community.

How do you start looking for a church?

Eddie and Kathy started with a Google search, looking for a church that was inclusive and biblical. They picked one out. But on Sunday morning, when they arrived at the church, they realized they had driven to the wrong church. But it was 10 am and the service was about to start, so they shrugged and followed others into the building.

They enjoyed the service and were surprised at how biblically based the teaching was. They went back the next Sunday.

The next week, they had to attend a funeral at their old church in Scarborough. They met a friend they hadn’t seen in a long time and started talking about this new church. When they mentioned the pastor, David, they were surprised to discover their friend knew him very well, and there were many other people in their circles who were also connected with him.

Returning to Eastminster, they quickly became friends with Pastor David. Not only did they share multiple connections, but they also found common ground in a love for the Bible and people. Pastor David describes himself as the “most liberal evangelical and the most conservative United Church minister”, a mix that appealed to Eddie and Kathy. Within 6 months, they became members of the church. They started a small group and have been sharing their love of the Bible with people in the small group ever since.

Today, they have rich connections with people in the church, and are grateful they took the risk of getting in their car on a Sunday morning back in December 2018.

A wrong turn that led to the right church.
