From serving to belonging

I have been a member of Eastminster for most of my life.

As a child, I remember having fun in Sunday School. But as a teenager, I became a C&E Christian: Christmas & Easter.

That changed as my parents got older and I decided that I wanted to go to church with them once again. It was a bonding time with my mom & dad. As I got married and then had my children, the people I met at Eastminster became my extended family.

When my children were little, we needed a coordinator for the nursery. I decided that instead of complaining about things, I would put my money where my mouth is. No sense complaining that something needs to be done unless you are willing to step up yourself.

That was the start of my journey of serving in the church. I started as Nursery Coordinator, then ran the two-year-old room, then on to Sunday School as teacher/coordinator. Once my kids were older, I moved on to serving in other committees. I have worked and chaired various teams over the years, including Finance, Joint Search teams, Fellowship, and Church Council.

This work not only helps to understand how the church works, but it also builds great relationships with other fantastic people who have the same goals: to make Eastminster sustainable and relevant.

We have had many changes over the years, but the caring community of faith remains.  I find it humbling to know that people care for me and will pray for me and my family when we are going through trials, as well as share in my joys.

For me, serving began out of a need, but it became much more: a place to belong, to build community, and to have an impact on others.

We are indeed a family of faith.
